Carmelo to the Lakers????

The Denver Nuggets have had preliminary discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers on a Carmelo Anthony trade, league sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard on Tuesday.

The Lakers' package would be built around center Andrew Bynum. Denver has no interest in Ron Artest and isn't particularly interested in Lamar Odom either, sources said. A straight-up deal of Bynum for Anthony works financially, but there could be other players involved since Denver would look to shed more salary if possible.

Sources described the talks as in their infancy, and a three-way deal between the Knicks, Nuggets and Wolves is very much alive.

Bynum is averaging 11.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 27 games this season as he works his way back from injury. In five full seasons with Los Angeles, Bynum has averaged only 56 games per season due to injuries.

Anthony is coming off a 50-point, 11-rebound outing Monday, but the Nuggets lost to the Rockets.

Three Team Deal Discussed For Melo

The Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks are discussing a three-team trade that would make forward Carmelo Anthony a Knick before the Feb. 24 trade deadline, according to league sources.
In the proposed trade, New York would send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota and the Timberwolves would send Corey Brewer and a first-round pick to Denver. Denver would also receive Wilson Chandler from New York.
A Timberwolves source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher on Sunday that the team would not approve of a deal where the team received just New York's Randolph and Curry with Brewer and a first-rounder heading to Denver. While these are the names currently being discussed, additional players could be added to make a deal possible, sources said.
The deal is not expected to happen until the middle of next week at the earliest, and one source said it could drag out until the trade deadline. Denver, which has been exchanging proposals with the Knicks for the past couple weeks, is weighing other options.
With teams aware of Anthony's desire to play in New York, the Nuggets' choices are limited. With little chance of signing Anthony long-term, few clubs are willing to send valuable assets to Denver.
If the trade with New York and Minnesota goes through, Anthony would be in line to receive a three-year, $65 million contract extension as part of the agreement in what is known as an extend-and-trade.
Since Anthony's preference to play for New York is known, there is some sentiment within the Knicks organization to hold off on trading for him and wait until he becomes a free agent this summer. Such a move would enable them to keep their young assets.
But owner James Dolan has been pressing team president Donnie Walsh to trade for Anthony before the deadline, according to sources.
"Dolan is really pressuring Walsh to get Melo, but Denver has been vacillating back and forth," one of the sources said.
A trade to New York would end the season-long saga that began last summer when Anthony refused to sign the contract extension with the Nuggets.
Late in the preseason, reports of a potential four-team deal with New Jersey, Utah and Charlotte that would make Anthony a Net surfaced.
But league sources say the deal was overblown and New Jersey was actually leaking the story in an effort to pressure Denver's new front office regime of Josh Kroenke and Masai Ujiri into making a deal.
Last month, reports of another potential trade of Anthony to New Jersey surfaced, this time involving the Detroit Pistons. That deal was close to being agreed upon, but Anthony was reluctant to sign the three-year, $65 million extension with New Jersey.
Anthony agreed to meet with the Nets but owner Mikhail Prokhorov called off his club's pursuit of Anthony in a news conference a day before the scheduled sit-down was to take place.
There have been no talks between New Jersey and Denver since Prokhorov pulled out of the deal, but the Nets are monitoring the Nuggets' discussions with other teams. The possibility of New Jersey reigniting talks with the Nuggets remains until the Nets trade away Troy Murphy, whose expiring contract is critical to any deal between the two clubs.

Jury finds ex-police chief ‘not guilty’ in boy’s Uzi death trial

Former Pelham, Mass., Police Chief...
Former Pelham, Mass., Police Chief Edward Fleury was found not guilty today in a trial related to the in accidental Uzi death of 8-year-old Conn. boy.
SPRINGFIELD — A Massachusetts jury has acquitted a gun fair organizer of manslaughter in the 2008 death of an 8-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head with an Uzi submachine gun.
A Hampden Superior Court jury found former Pelham Police Chief Edward Fleury not guilty on Friday of involuntary manslaughter and other charges in the death of Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Conn. The charge carried up to 20 years on prison.
A prosecutor argued Fleury was criminally reckless in running a gun fair at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club west of Springfield because he allowed children to shoot machine guns under the supervision of an unlicensed and uncertified teenager.
Fleury’s lawyer denied he was reckless and noted Christopher’s father signed a liability waiver.

Lakers vs Golden State: Lakers defeat Warriors with a big fourth quarter

Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant (24) Shoots

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant scored 17 of his 39 points in the final 5:49 and the sluggish Los Angeles Lakers rallied late to beat the Golden State Warriors 115-110 on Wednesday night for their sixth straight victory.
Bryant also assisted on Ron Artest's crucial 3-pointer with 1:55 to play. Lamar Odom did his part to fuel the comeback, scoring 10 straight points during a key fourth-quarter stretch on the way to 20 points and nine rebounds.
Pau Gasol added 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who looked uncharacteristically out of sync for much of the game before turning it on when it mattered for their 12th consecutive win over the Warriors and sixth straight in Oakland.

Chiefs coach Haley will hire an OC, 'consider' calling plays

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chiefs coach Todd Haley could wind up calling plays next season.
Haley said Tuesday that he intends to hire a replacement for offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who is leaving to take a similar position at the University of Florida. But Haley indicated he might take a bigger role in calling plays, as he did after firing offensive coordinator Chan Gailey shortly before the 2009 season opener.
Haley was a successful offensive coordinator at Arizona, helping the Cardinals reach the Super Bowl before he took over in Kansas City in 2009.
Asked Tuesday if he would consider calling plays next season, Haley said: "I'll consider anything. ... But it's going to be a very thorough evaluation of the entire system."
Weis, a three-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriotsand former head coach at Notre Dame, was part of a franchise-record six-game improvement in 2010. The Chiefs went from 4-12 in 2009 to 10-6 this season, and they won their first AFC West title since 2003.
In training camp, Weis said his main goal was "to fix what's wrong with the quarterback," and Matt Cassel made a huge leap. After throwing 16 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions last season, Cassel finished the 2010 season with 27 TD tosses and just seven picks.
The Chiefs also put running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe into the Pro Bowl in a season that ended with a 30-7 loss Sunday to Baltimore in the first round of the playoffs.
"We had a real good coordinator here in Charlie, who has moved on to Florida, and we have to make sure that we continue to develop our coaches and have good coaches on the staff," Haley said. "That's a critical part of being a successful team year in and year out and reaching our goals, which is to be a championship team."
A number of potential replacements for Weis have drawn mention, including Josh McDaniels, who was fired last month as the Denver Broncos' head coach. But Haley and McDaniels have had a stormy relationship, to put it mildly.
In what proved to be an embarrassing moment for Haley, he refused to shake McDaniels' hand immediately after a blowout loss Nov. 14 in Denver. Haley apologized the next day to fans and to McDaniels but conceded that he hadn't called the coach personally.
"I would not discount anything right now," Haley said. "What I'm going to be interested in is getting it right. I feel like last year I got it right. We were able to continue to make big progress in building the identity of this team and, on top of that, having some success, to boot. We didn't accomplish all of our goals. But I feel like we got it right, and my staff, our staff, continues to grow and develop. You need to be developing coaches also. We'll get it right."Another possibility could be Nick Sirianni, the Chiefs' young quality-control coach on offense. Sirianni would seem a long shot because he has just two years in the NFL, but Haley has spoken highly of him in the past and given him much credit for taking a role in Cassel's improvement.
The ultimate decision will be his, Haley said. Whoever is hired will be his third offensive coordinator in three years.
Haley said he's not concerned about a perception he's not an easy head coach for an offensive coordinator to join.
"It's not something I've thought about or considered," Haley said. "I'm going to continue doing the things that I know as the head coach have got this ship going in the right direction and moving at a pretty good clip."
Haley also disputed a report on Kansas City sports-talk radio station KCSP-AM that he relieved Weis of play-calling responsibilities in the second half of Sunday's loss to Baltimore.
"Absolutely not true," he said.
