Jury finds ex-police chief ‘not guilty’ in boy’s Uzi death trial

Former Pelham, Mass., Police Chief...
Former Pelham, Mass., Police Chief Edward Fleury was found not guilty today in a trial related to the in accidental Uzi death of 8-year-old Conn. boy.
SPRINGFIELD — A Massachusetts jury has acquitted a gun fair organizer of manslaughter in the 2008 death of an 8-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head with an Uzi submachine gun.
A Hampden Superior Court jury found former Pelham Police Chief Edward Fleury not guilty on Friday of involuntary manslaughter and other charges in the death of Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Conn. The charge carried up to 20 years on prison.
A prosecutor argued Fleury was criminally reckless in running a gun fair at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club west of Springfield because he allowed children to shoot machine guns under the supervision of an unlicensed and uncertified teenager.
Fleury’s lawyer denied he was reckless and noted Christopher’s father signed a liability waiver.

Lakers vs Golden State: Lakers defeat Warriors with a big fourth quarter

Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant (24) Shoots

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant scored 17 of his 39 points in the final 5:49 and the sluggish Los Angeles Lakers rallied late to beat the Golden State Warriors 115-110 on Wednesday night for their sixth straight victory.
Bryant also assisted on Ron Artest's crucial 3-pointer with 1:55 to play. Lamar Odom did his part to fuel the comeback, scoring 10 straight points during a key fourth-quarter stretch on the way to 20 points and nine rebounds.
Pau Gasol added 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who looked uncharacteristically out of sync for much of the game before turning it on when it mattered for their 12th consecutive win over the Warriors and sixth straight in Oakland.

Chiefs coach Haley will hire an OC, 'consider' calling plays

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chiefs coach Todd Haley could wind up calling plays next season.
Haley said Tuesday that he intends to hire a replacement for offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who is leaving to take a similar position at the University of Florida. But Haley indicated he might take a bigger role in calling plays, as he did after firing offensive coordinator Chan Gailey shortly before the 2009 season opener.
Haley was a successful offensive coordinator at Arizona, helping the Cardinals reach the Super Bowl before he took over in Kansas City in 2009.
Asked Tuesday if he would consider calling plays next season, Haley said: "I'll consider anything. ... But it's going to be a very thorough evaluation of the entire system."
Weis, a three-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriotsand former head coach at Notre Dame, was part of a franchise-record six-game improvement in 2010. The Chiefs went from 4-12 in 2009 to 10-6 this season, and they won their first AFC West title since 2003.
In training camp, Weis said his main goal was "to fix what's wrong with the quarterback," and Matt Cassel made a huge leap. After throwing 16 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions last season, Cassel finished the 2010 season with 27 TD tosses and just seven picks.
The Chiefs also put running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe into the Pro Bowl in a season that ended with a 30-7 loss Sunday to Baltimore in the first round of the playoffs.
"We had a real good coordinator here in Charlie, who has moved on to Florida, and we have to make sure that we continue to develop our coaches and have good coaches on the staff," Haley said. "That's a critical part of being a successful team year in and year out and reaching our goals, which is to be a championship team."
A number of potential replacements for Weis have drawn mention, including Josh McDaniels, who was fired last month as the Denver Broncos' head coach. But Haley and McDaniels have had a stormy relationship, to put it mildly.
In what proved to be an embarrassing moment for Haley, he refused to shake McDaniels' hand immediately after a blowout loss Nov. 14 in Denver. Haley apologized the next day to fans and to McDaniels but conceded that he hadn't called the coach personally.
"I would not discount anything right now," Haley said. "What I'm going to be interested in is getting it right. I feel like last year I got it right. We were able to continue to make big progress in building the identity of this team and, on top of that, having some success, to boot. We didn't accomplish all of our goals. But I feel like we got it right, and my staff, our staff, continues to grow and develop. You need to be developing coaches also. We'll get it right."Another possibility could be Nick Sirianni, the Chiefs' young quality-control coach on offense. Sirianni would seem a long shot because he has just two years in the NFL, but Haley has spoken highly of him in the past and given him much credit for taking a role in Cassel's improvement.
The ultimate decision will be his, Haley said. Whoever is hired will be his third offensive coordinator in three years.
Haley said he's not concerned about a perception he's not an easy head coach for an offensive coordinator to join.
"It's not something I've thought about or considered," Haley said. "I'm going to continue doing the things that I know as the head coach have got this ship going in the right direction and moving at a pretty good clip."
Haley also disputed a report on Kansas City sports-talk radio station KCSP-AM that he relieved Weis of play-calling responsibilities in the second half of Sunday's loss to Baltimore.
"Absolutely not true," he said.

Reed's brother vanishes; safety's status for Ravens unclear

Ed Reed's younger brother is missing after apparently jumping into the Mississippi River on Friday.

The Baltimore Ravens are unsure of Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed's status for Sunday's AFC wild-card playoff game at Kansas City, according to team sources.
A man believed to be a brother of Reed has been missing since Friday afternoon, when he reportedly jumped into the Mississippi River to evade police.
Karen Reed, the mother of Ed and Brian Reed, said investigators in Louisiana found shoes and a jacket belonging to Brian Reed, 28.
The Ravens organization is supporting Reed and remains in contact with him and his family. As of Saturday morning, it was unclear whether Reed will travel with the team to Kansas City.
The Ravens are departing Baltimore for Kansas City at 2 p.m. ET.
Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange of the St. Charles Parish (La.) Sheriff's Office said authorities were unable to identify the man who jumped in the river. He said the man had jumped into the river around 10 a.m. Friday when a deputy told him to put his hands behind his back.
LaGrange says the deputy had spotted the man with a parked car that matched the description of a stolen vehicle.
Authorities have called off the search for the missing man.

Man in coma after beating at EpiCentre

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A fight at Uptown Charlotte’s Epicentre severely injured a 31-year-old man, and police are asking for help to identify the person or people responsible for the attack.
Yassine Moudarrir is in a coma and has significant brain trauma.  He may never walk or talk again, according to his wife.
“More than anything we just want him to come home with us.  We miss him so much,” said the victim’s wife, Jenna Shirey.
Moudarrir was out with friends at the Epicentre’s Suite club early on the morning of Monday, December 20th, 2010.  A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detective says someone inside the club pulled a fire alarm at 2:18 AM, and then an altercation broke out inside the club.  Moudarrir was found outside the club on the 3rd floor.
Moudarrir’s wife told NewsChannel 36 that his friends witnessed bouncers from the club “swarming” around him, but that none of the friends have been able to definitively identify any of his attackers.
“They can be so tough to beat a man within an inch of his death,” said Moudarrir’s wife.  “Yet they can’t have the guts to come forward and own up to what they did.”
A representative from Suite did send a short statement to NewsChannel36.  In full, it reads:
“We are aware of the incident that occurred on December 20 and have been working with the authorities.  Our prayers are with the victim of this senseless incident.  Despite previously published reports, this did not occur at Suite or during Suite's business hours, rather it occurred off our property in a neighboring area in the Epicentre.”
The Suite statement did not address the accusations that club bouncers were involved in the incident.
Police say the club is cooperating with the investigation, but there are discrepancies in the statements from witnesses.
“We have some ideas about what may have happened.  That is why we need someone {to come forward} who wasn’t with either the victim or the club,” said Detective Brandy Lingle.
Moudarrir is a husband and father of three.  His wife says doctors cannot provide much information about his chances for recovery.  She told NewsChannel 36, she is just trying to keep the faith.
“I’m hoping he will come home to us.  I am hoping for him to get better.  I am hoping he gets to see his son take his first steps.  And I am hoping whoever did this does not get to stay out there for their whole life.  I hope they get what they deserve for doing this to us and to our family.”
Police want to speak with anyone who may have seen the fight.  Anyone with information should call Detective Lingle at 704-432-3427.

Rich Rodriguez Fired

Michigan has fired football coach Rich Rodriguez after his third season ended with a school-record 38-point loss in the Gator Bowl, Fox 2 TV and the Detroit Free Press are reporting.
The report comes after Rodriguez met with athletic director Dave Brandon earlier Tuesday. Members of the football team are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, according to report from annarbor.com.
Michigan's Gator Bowl loss to Mississippi State knocked Rodriguez's overall record to 15-22 with college football's winningest program. He was 6-18 in Big Ten games, 0-6 against rivals Ohio State and Michigan State and 2-11 versus ranked teams in The Associated Press' Top 25 at the time of the game.
After the Gator Bowl, Rodriguez described his mood as "disappointed and frustrated, but not discouraged" after the Wolverines' loss left them 7-6. Michigan will owe him $2.5 million to buy out the final three years of his contract.
Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, who played quarterback at Michigan, has been cited as a potential candidate to replace Rodriguez, should he be dismissed. But a source with direct knowledge of Harbaugh's thinking said Harbaugh is "highly unlikely" to accept the Michigan job if offered, the Detroit Free Press reported.
NCAA compliance issues and three losses to archrival Ohio State have not helped matters for Rodriguez, who left West Virginia to succeed Lloyd Carr.
Last year, the NCAA disciplined the program for practice and training violations, but didn't decide that Rodriguez had failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance with NCAA rules.
The problems came to light just before the 2009 season when the Detroit Free Press, quoting anonymous players, reported that the program was exceeding NCAA limits on practice and training time.

Phil Jackson Clarifies Comments & Kobe Doesn't Them

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- A home loss like the Los Angeles Lakers experienced Sunday, a 19-point drubbing to a sub-.500 Memphis Grizzlies team, reverberates a little longer than a typical one-of-82 regular season loss.
So, after a long practice Monday, the team was still talking about what was said after Sunday's game along with looking ahead to the upcoming schedule.
Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 28 points against the Grizzlies but 17 of those points came in the third quarter when he took 12 of the Lakers' 22 shot attempts as a team. With Bryant controlling the offense, Memphis' lead ballooned from nine at halftime to 17 headed into the fourth.
"When a game starts getting out of hand -- and rightly so -- Kobe will crank it up, not screw it up," Jackson said. "I used that term 'screw it up' but not in terms of it being an error or a mistake, but 'crank it up.' He'll go to another notch to try to get us back in the ballgame. That's something we do in the fourth quarter, that's our fourth quarter action, that's how we win ballgames. To have to crank it up and do that in the third quarter, we didn't have much left in the gas tank after that."Jackson clarified what he meant when he said "screw up the game" after practice, taking some of the bite out of the sound bite.
Bryant admitted Jackson's assessment was not off base, but said it is his role on the team to bear the brunt of the scoring load from time to time.
"[Jackson] was right, I totally broke the offense, but I did it intentionally because I felt like we needed to get something started because what we were doing just wasn't working," Bryant said. "So, I tried to kick start it and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't but that's my responsibility. When it works out? Great. When it doesn't? I'll take the criticism for it, but I have thick enough skin to be able to do that. ... You just have to take the good with the bad. That's part of my job in the seat that I sit.
"I was trying to win the damn game. We were playing like [expletive], we all were, so I was just trying to get something going, trying to pump a little energy to us and it just didn't work out. But Phil doesn't really care how many shots I take, he just wants me to take them inside of the offense. [Sunday] was one of those days where I was like, '[Expletive] the triangle, I need to get myself going and try to save this damn game,' and it just didn't work out."
Bryant did not take offense to the message.
"When you've been around Phil for as many years as I have, we all understand that he likes coaching publicly and I think it's important for the new guys to understand that -- Ron [Artest],Pau [Gasol], guys who kind of have issues with that," Bryant said. "You see myself, you see Fish [Derek Fisher], we understand that's how he coaches so it's fine. You just let him do his job and you go about your business."
Gasol said that last season he was irked by Jackson going to the press when he was out with a hamstring injury and "joking around with it a little too much," but accepts the practice.
"Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't," Gasol said. "With me, I try not to pay too much attention to it. I find out from you guys when you say, 'Phil just said ...' and I'm like, 'OK.' That's just part of his coaching strategy and mindset. That's the way he does it and guys, I think, respect him and understand why he does it. He doesn't try to create any trouble; he just tries to motivate guys to do better."
Gasol, who is averaging just 13.7 points on 10.5 shot attempts per game during the team's current 2-4 slump over its last six games, described what it is like to play with Bryant when he commandeers the offense.
"We're all familiar with his game and his ability to score and his ability to take over games," Gasol said. "Sometimes it's a double-edged sword because it can keep you in the games or even sometimes win you games, but it can also lose you games. I think we're more effective and we're more successful when our offense is balanced and everybody is contributing. We all know that. We're in good shape when everybody is scoring 10-plus points and getting good looks, because the offense will do that for you."
The Lakers placed just three players in double-digits Sunday with Gasol scoring 10 and Shannon Brown chipping in 11 to go along with Bryant's 28 points. Coming into the Lakers recent struggles over the last six games, Gasol was averaging 19.8 points on 14.8 shot attempts per game.
While the issue about Bryant's scoring was seemingly put to rest, Jackson pointed to another potential reason for the problems the Lakers are going through -- outside distractions.
"[The challenge] is keeping them intrigued and immersed in what we're doing so they don't get bored," Jackson said. "We're a little afraid that some of the outside activity is an element that may be distracting them. I never thought that would happen. I thought we had professional guys. But, maybe it is."
Among the extra-curricular activities surrounding the Lakers this season have been Artest's championship ring raffle, Brown's engagement to R&B singer Monica, Lamar Odom's proposed reality TV show with wife Khloe Kardashian, controversies surrounding Bryant endorsing Turkish Airlines and appearing in a commercial featuring gun play for the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops and even Fisher fulfilling his role as president of the player's association with a lockout looming.
"I wouldn't name names," Jackson said when asked which distractions he was referring to.
All in all, Bryant said that the trials and tribulations facing this season's three-peat bid are nothing compared to what the Lakers went through in the early 2000s when he and Shaquille O'Neal feuded over control of the team.
"We had some deep-seeded issues on that team. That was a very dysfunctional group. This is not that," Bryant said. "It looks pretty grim right now, but I like the way we're working."

Lakers booed as Grizzlies rout them at home

Article Tab : Kobe Bryant is defended by Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies during the first half of their game at Staples Center on Sunday.

LOS ANGELES – Phil Jackson cited lack of focus. Kobe Bryant cited lack of energy. Pau Gasol cited lack of togetherness.
For a two-time defending NBA champion team, the Lakers sure are lacking some basic basketball ingredients.
The Memphis Grizzlies exposed the Lakers, 104-85, at Staples Center on Sunday night.
"Just about every category, we got outplayed," Coach Jackson said of the Lakers (23-11).
The Lakers' lack of teamwork was evident in their assist-to-turnover margin of 13 to 20. Memphis' was 30-10.
Bryant tried to turn up the energy in the third quarter with his offensive attack, but there was considerable defensive slippage at the same time. The Grizzlies wound up with 28 fast-break points to the Lakers' five, reflective of the Lakers' worsening transition defense.
"You play bad defense at home, on the road, at the park ... you lose the ballgame," Lakers forward Lamar Odom said.
Odom remained confident, however, in the Lakers' long-term prospects, saying: "Not worried. We know what we got."
Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins agreed, saying: "It doesn't matter that the Lakers have 10 or 11 losses at this stage in the season. It doesn't matter if they pound everybody into submission at this time of the season. They will be there when the season is over, competing for a championship."
On Sunday night, though, Staples Center fans booed the team that wasn't competing at all.
"I would've booed," Lakers center Andrew Bynum said. "I would've been mad."
The Lakers have lost three of their past four home games by 16 points to Milwaukee, 19 to Miami and 19 to Memphis. Jackson acknowledged how uncharacteristic it is for the Lakers to be noncompetitive to the end at home.
"They have a right to boo," Bryant said of Lakers fans.

NYE 2011 Part 2

NYE 2011 Part 1

Chiefs Host The Ravens In Wild Card

The Baltimore Ravens will be coming to Arrowhead Stadium next weekend. The AFC playoff picture is complete and the Kansas City Chiefs will hold the fourth seed hosting the Ravens on either Saturday or Sunday.
The Chiefs controlled the third seed heading into Week 17 but lost to the Oakland Raiders and, as the Colts won, put them in a tie with Indy for the third spot at 10-6 but the Colts own the tiebreaker with the Chiefs.
The entire AFC playoff picture is decided. The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are your top two seeds and both will have a first round bye. The Colts are the third seed and will host the sixth seed New York Jets. The Chiefs are the fourth seed and will host the fifth seed Ravens.
If they can win in the wildcard round, the Chiefs will travel to New England to take on the Patriots. Yes, Patriots West vs Patriots East. Eat your heart out, ESPN.
We've got a long week ahead of us, folks. The first order of business though is finding out what day and time the game will be. The options are Saturday January 8 and Sunday January 9. We should be hearing about that tonight.

Colts Win The South

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts secured the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs with a 23-20 win over the Tennessee Titans.
Indianapolis turned a fumbled snap by the Titans into one last scoring drive to end a back-and-forth game, and Adam Vinatieri kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired for the winning margin.
The Colts (10-6) won the AFC South for the seventh time in eight years even before Vinatieri's kick because Jacksonville lost to Houston 34-17.
Indy will host the New York Jets next weekend in its ninth straight playoff appearance, matching an NFL record.
The Titans (6-10) ended what might be Jeff Fisher's last season as head coach with their eighth loss in nine games.
